1 Year Electricity Bill (approximately) | -- |
Note: Your electricity bill can change based on various factors like meter charges, demand charges, VAT tax, and your overall electricity consumption. These factors can impact the total amount you pay, so it's important to be aware of them. Understanding how these components work together can help you manage your energy costs more effectively
Calculating Your Electricity Bill in Bangladesh Made Simple
Understanding how your electricity bill is calculated in Bangladesh is vital to manage your expenses effectively. Here's a straightforward guide to help you calculate your unit cost and total bill:
Step 1: Calculate Your Electricity Consumption
Start by using our Energy Calculator to determine your electricity consumption, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). Let's illustrate this with an example of 198 kWh for this guide.
Step 2: Know the Price Tiers
On February 29, 2024, Bangladesh implemented new tiered pricing system based on your monthly consumption. Here are the standard rates for Household:
- 0-50 units = 4.63 Taka/kWh * (Palli Bidyut)
- 0-75 units = 5.26 Taka/kWh
- 76-200 units = 7.20 Taka/kWh
- 201-300 units = 7.59 Taka/kWh
- 301-400 units = 8.02 Taka/kWh
- 401-600 units = 12.67 Taka/kWh
- Above 600 units = 14.61 Taka/kWh
Step 3: Calculate Your Bill
Determine the range(s) your total units fall into. For 198 kWh, it falls into two ranges:
- 1-75 units = 75 units
- 76-198 units = 122 units
Calculate the cost for each range by multiplying your units by the respective rate:
- Cost for 1-75 units: 75 units * 5.26 Taka/kWh = 394.50 Taka
- Cost for 76-198 units: 122 units * 7.20 Taka/kWh = 878.40 Taka
Add up the costs for all ranges to get your Energy Cost:
- Energy Cost = 394.50 Taka + 878.40 Taka = 1272.90 Taka
Step 4: Include Extra Charges
Your bill may also include additional charges like service fees, demand charges, VAT, and meter rent. These are added to the Energy Cost.
- Demand Charge: Another fixed monthly fee (e.g., TK 42 for 1 Kwh).
- VAT (Value Added Tax): Usually a percentage of the total bill (e.g., 5%).
- Meter Rent: Monthly, the cost of renting your single phase electricity meter (e.g., TK 40).
- 0.5% Rebate: A 0.5% discount on the energy cost.
Calculate VAT Amount:
Calculate the vat amount based on the Energy Cost for your electricity usage (as calculated in the previous steps).
- VAT Amount = Energy Cost * VAT Rate
- VAT Amount = 1272.90 Taka * 5%
- VAT Amount ≈ 63.65 Taka (approximately)
Calculate Rebate (0.5%) Amount:
Calculate the 0.5% rebate based on the energy cost (before VAT is added)
- 0.5% Rebate Amount = Energy Cost * 0.5%
- 0.5% Rebate Amount ≈ 6.36 Taka (approximately)
Step 5: Find Your Total Bill After VAT and Rebate
To find your total electricity bill after applying VAT and the 0.5% rebate, follow these steps:
- Total Bill After VAT and Rebate = Energy Cost + Demand Charge + VAT Amount + Meter Rent - 0.5% Rebate Amount
- Total Bill After VAT and Rebate ≈ 1272.90 Taka + 42 Taka + 63.65 Taka + 40 Taka - 6.36 Taka
- Total Bill After VAT and Rebate ≈ 1412.19 Taka (approximately)
So, with VAT and the 0.5% rebate applied, your estimated electricity bill for this month, including all additional charges, is approximately 1412.19 Taka. This calculation takes into account unit costs, all relevant fees, VAT, and the rebate.
